7 Website Design Mistakes to Avoid

When designing a website many companies make critical website design mistakes. Here's how to avoid them and create a great looking site.

A potential customer does an internet search, finds your link, and clicks through to your page. But after three seconds, the person gives up and leaves. Bad website design has lost you the sale.

If your website's too crowded or confusing, your potential customers won't be able to find your products or contact you. Instead, they'll look for sites that are easier to use. But if you avoid common design pitfalls, you'll keep your customers on your website.

Here are seven website design mistakes you should avoid.

1. Not Using Images

When you forget to add images, you miss opportunities to hook your readers and promote your brand. Adding photos and images makes each page more visually appealing, which in turn entices readers to read content and stay longer. Adding text to the images also helps with SEO.

2. Not Using a Favicon

Website designers often forget to create a custom favicon, the little icon displayed on the corner of the browser tab. But a favicon, one of the first images a consumer sees, can hook users and draw them into your site. The favicon also helps users return to your site if they've opened several tabs at a time.

3. Making Your Homepage Too Complex

Your homepage, or the page where visitors arrive at your website, should display information about your company's services and products. However, if you shove too much information onto the homepage, visitors won't be able to find what they're looking for. A good homepage should share just enough information to draw readers deeper into your website.

4. Not Using Whitespace

A crowded screen can alienate visitors. Use whitespace to spread out your design elements and give the reader a break between sections. You can also use whitespace to guide your reader through the page.

5. Forgetting the Navigation Menu

When consumers visit your website, you hope they'll end up contacting you or buying your products. But what if they can't find the important sections? Make sure that your homepage has a navigation menu that's easy to find and use so that your consumers can navigate to where you want them to end up.

6. Hiding Your Contact Information

Your contact page contains the information that can turn a reader into a customer. Make sure that this page contains clear ways to contact you, such as your phone number, links to calendar appointments, or contact forms. You should also display ways for consumers to follow you on social media, sign up for email letters, or get updates.

7. Not Making It Mobile-Friendly

If you picture your users accessing your website from large screens, think again. In the last few years, mobile devices have generated more than half of all web traffic, so make sure your website is mobile-friendly.
