The Six Main Types of SEO

There are six main types of SEO. These include: 

  • Black Hat SEO

  • Grey Hat SEO

  • White Hat SEO 

  • On-Page SEO

  • Off-Page SEO

  • Technical SEO 

Not all of these techniques are advisable, or even desirable. Let’s explore these different SEO types further. 


Black Hat SEO 

There are several techniques that fall under black hat SEO and these are all about finding shortcuts to exploit Google’s algorithm. 


With black hat SEO, it is often fair to say that you will have a website that an automated bot would read and rank highly, but they are seldom created with human eyes in mind. For this reason, it is best to steer clear of black hat techniques. 


The type of techniques that are used in black hat SEO include keyword stuffing and paid link building. Keyword stuffing might get a page to where you want it, but ultimately it will be difficult to read. 


Grey Hat SEO 

Grey hat SEO as you might imagine involves processes that are not as bad as black hat SEO but are fairly questionable. These include creating clickbait content and paying for reviews. Again, these techniques should be avoided as you could be penalized by Google’s rankings. 


White Hat SEO 

Any SEO practices that meet the standards and recommendations of Google are considered as white hat SEO. These could include aspects of technical, on-page or off-page SEO. This means sharing content that is relevant and readable and using keywords in a well-researched manner. 


On-Page SEO

Any steps that you take on your website to increase your page ranking could be considered as on-page SEO. 


On-page SEO  might include using keywords, the use of image alt tags, making sure that your site has the right URL structure, and producing high-quality content. It will also include the use of meta-descriptions. 


Off-Page SEO 

Off-page SEO refers to anything that you do outside of your website to promote it. This includes using online registers such as Google My Business or Yelp! to list your business and website. 


Off-page SEO also includes guest posting and the building of high-quality backlinks to your site. 


Technical SEO 

Anything that you do on your site’s code to help Google’s bots crawl your site is considered technical SEO. This might include carrying out work to make your site mobile friendly. It may also include optimizing image sizes and using caching to improve page-load speeds.
