Did you know last year, Google was responsible for over 79% of global traffic? This is one of the many reasons why the internet is such a valuable asset to your business.

'How do you make the most of it'? I hear you cry!

The answer is; SEO.

We've compiled this quick guide entitled SEO for dummies so you can start improving your online marketing efforts.

Let's dive in.

What's SEO?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, we need to answer the above question.

Put simply; SEO is a way of driving traffic to your site organically (for free) by ranking higher on Google's search results.

There are loads of ways you can optimize your website for SEO. From how you write your copy to tagging your pictures, there are tons of things that'll help search engines notice you.

On-Page SEO

If you want to begin SEO optimizing your site, you need to do the following things.

Please note, you probably won't see massive results for anywhere between 6 months to a year so be patient, keep at it, and then you'll reap the rewards.

1. Keyword Research

Keyword research is the first step towards successfully optimizing your site for SEO.

You'll have to slot your keyword into your content's copy which is why it's the first on our list.

You can use free resources such as Google's Keyword Planner to find the phrases your audience is searching for. Ideally, your keyword should:

  • Contain five words or more (these are typically easier to rank for).

  • Ask a question you can answer

  • Be searched more than 100 times a month

Top Tip: never pick a keyword phrase that includes the word 'free.' This attracts visitors who aren't willing to spend their hard-earned cash. Therefore, they won't boost your profits.

Once you've picked your keyword, cleverly insert it into your web page. You can't overstuff your copy because this looks unnatural and Google doesn't like that.

However, you should always enter your keyword into the following places:

  • Your headline

  • Your URL

  • Your meta description

When it comes to the body of your content's copy, try and include it in your introduction, your conclusion, and one of your subheadings.

2. Produce Regular Content

Google loves providing answers to the questions their users are asking. So, if you want to rank your site, you need to provide helpful solutions.

This means crafting high-quality content. Not only is this excellent for SEO, but it'll also help you stand out from your competition.

In addition to high-quality content, it needs to publish regularly. This has proven itself to help improve rankings. You can also update your posts by rewriting them and gradually adding more info as you go along.

Long-form pieces are great for SEO optimization, that's why detailed yet easy to consume guides and how to's are so popular.

3. Yoast SEO Plugin

As we've previously mentioned, editing your meta description is essential for SEO optimization.

Installing the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin is the best way to do this.

Not only does this plugin help you optimize your metadata, but it'll also:

Help you edit metadata for your social media platforms. This ensures things like your images are correctly formatted. Plus, you can generate and update your sitemap.

Additionally, you can combine your site with Google Search Console. This allows you to find and repair any issues you're having with your website, quickly.

However, the best two features of this plugin are both the Readability and Keyword analysis tools.

These help to ensure you've accurately optimized your content for your chosen keyword, and that your content's easily accessible for your readers.

4. Mobile-friendliness

Nowadays, your site needs to be mobile friendly. Not only is this important for boosting your audience, but it's now essential for SEO optimization.

Check your site against Google's tool, and see how mobile friendly your site is. Luckily, most WordPress themes are already mobile-friendly, so they're good to go.

If they're not, you can install a plugin to transform your theme, so it's friendly for mobile users.

Once you've plugged your site into Google's tool, read their suggestions and make the necessary changes they suggest.

5. Page Speed

Boosting the load speed of your website not only creates a better experience for your customers, but Google also considers this a ranking factor.

If you're not sure how quick your site loads, use Google's 'Test My Site' tool to find out. This gives you a decent insight into to how well you're doing. You can also use Pingdom to monitor your website's speed.

If you need to decrease your web page's loading time, you can use either GIDNetwork or GZIP. These tools enable you to work out what and how you'll compress the info on your website to speed things up.

6. a Simple Url Structure

Search engines prefer short and snappy URLs. So don't make it long or overly complicated. If possible, just keep it to your main keyword (if it makes sense to do so).
