Web design trends seem to change faster than some sites can even load. There's always a new way to rank higher or increase user experience.

1. Be Mobile-Friendly

This web design trend has been around for a couple of years. The reason why you always see it pop up on these lists is that too many sites aren't mobile-friendly.


Yes, in 2019 there are still sites that are next to impossible to view on a smartphone.

This is not ideal for a few reasons. First, Google's algorithm accounts for mobile-friendliness now. That means that if your site doesn't load or work well on a mobile device, you're in trouble.


Another issue is that 52.2% of global website traffic is coming from mobile devices. This isn't something that you can put off any longer. Your site has to be mobile-friendly.


2. Icon Library

Icons have taken their rightful place in the world of modern web design. Designers and developers are using this simple visual effect to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

If you're not exactly sure what an Icon Library is, it's pretty simple.

When you log on to your homepage, your menu is likely in the top corner. Instead of hiding it in a drop-down, you turn the navigation options into icons. Then, you lay them out gallery-style on your main page.


For example, if you're in the logistics industry, you could have an icon for a truck representing delivery. You could use an icon of a barcode for your inventory management service.


When a potential customer visits your site, all their navigation options are clear and easy to find. Your icons should be scalable and linked to their designated internal page.


3. Use of Animations

Using a video or animation is becoming a huge trend in website backgrounds. They're enhancing user experience by making sites more interactive.


That said, videos can be distracting. The key is to design yours in a way that inspires your audience. You want to grab their attention and make them stick around to see what other innovations you may offer.

Also, make sure it isn't the focus of the page. Again, it's supposed to be attention-grabbing. It shouldn't overpower your message with chaos.


4. Video Headers

Having a user interface design that's relevant to your brand is imperative. But you can find ways to spice it up a bit too.


Video headers give you both.


Some sites have auto-play videos while others have gone the user usability route and allow their visitors to click "Play." Whichever one you choose, make sure it doesn't slow down your load time. If it does, talk to your developer about ways to increase your load speed.

Your page should take about 1.3 seconds to load. While there are variables that influence this, no one will wait around for more than a few seconds.


If adding video headers drastically slows down your load time, you may need to look into other options.


5. Minimalist Design

You may think it's impossible to have video and animation and still have a minimalist design. It isn't.


Look at Apple, for an example. They're the pioneers of utilizing white space to make your focus all about the latest iPhone. You can take a page out of their book.


Use the white space appropriately. If you forego on animation, use one large "hero image" that best represents your brand instead. Hire a professional commercial photographer to take a shot of your office. Or, have them focus on your best-selling product.


6. Bold Typography

Having clear, big, bold typography is as important as your mobile load speed. If visitors can't read anything, guess what? They're not going to stick around.


They may also get so frustrated that they're turned off from your company altogether. You don't want someone two years down the line to see your logo and think, "No way I'd buy anything from them! They're a mess!"


Make sure your typography is bold an appealing.


While a font may look beautiful on paper, it may not have the same effect on a screen. Make sure the font you choose doesn't outdated or is hard to read.


People are on your site for a reason. They want to gain something. Whether you offer a service or product, use typography that allows you to communicate effectively with the audience.


Make sure there's some separation in sizing as well. You want your headers to stand out, so make sure they're larger than the message text.


You can even use a complimentary font, but make sure it flows and is relevant.


7. Infographics

Infographics were one of the hottest website trends in 2018 and they'll only pick up steam in 2019. If you're going the infographic route, we have two suggestions.


1. Make sure it's attractive. This means, don't clutter it with information overload. While that's the point of an infographic, you can do it in a clear and concise way.


2. Make them embeddable.


You may not be a fan of infographics. Not everyone is. But the fact of the matter is they're not going anywhere so you might as well stop fighting it.


There are also plenty of resources out there that teach you how to make your own. So, don't feel you have to hire a graphic designer. You can let everyone know how important your product is within minutes.


8. Voice Search Optimization

Next year, voice optimization could be on the list of "web design trends for 2020." Right now, it's something to keep an eye on.


Why will this be a trend in the near future? By the end of the year, experts estimate that more than 90 million Americans will use smart speakers.


Savvy companies will soon integrate the same technology. The reason why it's projected that 30% of all searches will be voice activated by 2020. So, while it may not be an absolute must now, it will be very soon.


And if your developer does add a voice search function to your site? Well, we guess you'll be the one leaving everyone else in the dust.
