So You Need A Website...The Question Is When
You're starting your own company, and you probably have a million things running through your head. "Do this, do that...don't forget to check this out" so on and so forth. One thing you already know is you'll need a website. When starting your own company, no one gives you a times line or check sheets on when to complete each task. Hell, as a business owner...we multi-task like a pro!
So that still leaves that question on when do you get yourself a website for your company?
The easy answer; now! Yesterday! Today! As soon as possible. If you're waiting for something to be finished (ie a location to be built), you still don't wait. Start today! Waiting only means you're missing out. The sooner you get it up and running, promoting it, and talking about it, the better.
Still feel like you're not ready? Here's what you do. Start talking to a web designer (that's us...wink wink), get an idea of what you want. Start looking at other web sites that you might like. It can be the same industry or not. I good web designer will be able to look at those and get a feel for what you like about them.
Contact a local web developer (again, us). You will want to stay local with someone who knows your community. Talk about your goals of your business and online footprint with your website. Talk about timelines and moving forward with each phase of your website.
First phase, because we know not all companies are ready to be fully online, is starting a landing page website. This is a simple "coming soon" page where people can get an idea of what you're doing and subscribe with an email so that they can stay updated.
In the mean time, while you tackle other business tasks to get fully operating, you can tell everyone you own about the website early. Let everyone know and post it on social media often. Keep updates on it, and stay in contact with your marketing and web design company as to what is going on.
As things progress with your business, the web design can continue to work on and add to the site without those parts being published (so the public cannot see). Even if you don't know the timeline of the progression, we still recommend you complete a landing page at very minimum.
Many times, we have clients come to us and discuss how they didn't have the money in their budget, or it wasn't a priority at the time. Having a website for your business should always take a high priority simply because if done right, it can generate more sales.
Let's say you are starting a used car dealership. You're working behind the scenes, trying to find a location, etc but you haven't posted anything about it. No website, no discussion of web design, nothing. You're next door neighbor decides they need to buy their teenage son or daughter their first used car. Two months down the road, you're up and running, and your neighbor says, "well dang, I wish I knew, I would have waited a bought from you". You just missed a sale.
So now matter where you are at planning a business, whether you have it up and operating or not, our professional opinion is to go ahead and invest now. Waiting could mean you're missing out on customers or clients. Get started today!
